Water Quality & Sampling

The District provides weekly water testing, Memorial Day-Labor Day. In the event of high e. Coli levels or harmful algae blooms (HABs), additional information and notices will be posted.

Aug. 22, 2025: Devils Lake continues to have a blue-green algae bloom. Weekly tests samples report cyanobacteria is in the water, but safe for humans. Animals should continue to stay out of the water per Oregon Health Authority as Devils Lake still has a precautionary advisory in effect. Avoid water that is foamy, scummy, thick like paint, bright pea-green, blue-green or where brownish red mats can be seen. Some species of cyanobacteria (know as harmful or blue-green algae) can produce cyanotoxins that can make people, pets, and other animals sick.

Aug. 12, 2025: Oregon Health Authority has issued a precautionary advisory for Devils Lake. Additional testing and monitoring is taking place. Avoid water that is foamy, scummy, thick like paint, bright pea-green, blue-green or where brownish red mats can be seen. Some species of cyanobacteria (know as harmful or blue-green algae) can produce cyanotoxins that can make people, pets, and other animals sick. DEQ's recent test samples report safe for human recreation, but animals should avoid the water at this time. Advisory signs are placed at the public access points around Devils Lake as well as information on cyanobacteria.

Fish caught from areas where cyanobacteria blooms are present may pose unknown health risks, so OHA recommends not eating fish from those areas. Those who decide to eat the fish should remove fat, skin and organs before cooking or freezing. Toxins are more likely to collect in these tissues. Fillets should also be rinsed with clean water.

Aug. 8, 2025: Heavy particulates in the water column throughout the lake this week. Small patches of blue-green algae around stagnant water on shorelines. Low levels of microsystins detected and water samples sent out for further analysis. As a reminder, avoid water that is foamy, scummy, thick like paint, bright pea-green, blue-green or where brownish red mats can be seen. Some species of cyanobacteria (know as harmful or blue-green algae) can produce cyanotoxins that can make people, pets, and other animals sick.

July 21, 2025: DEQ sample testing results show low microsystin levels below the pet safety values. Oregon Health Authority has lifted the precautionary advisory for Devils Lake.

June 26, 2025: Many reports of thick, blue-green scum, foamy, pea-green water and algae. As a reminder, avoid water that is foamy, scummy, thick like paint, bright pea-green, blue-green or where brownish red mats can be seen. DEQ will be testing Devils Lake on 6/30 for harmful algae and water quality.

June 18, 2025: Priliminary DEQ results showed non-toxic algae at this time.

June 10, 2025: Oregon Health Authority has issed a precautionary advisory for Devils Lake.
